Michael Todd Schulenberg this week settled the civil suit against him, through agreeing to pay $30,000 to settle a federal civil violation, while state prosecutors are yet to announce whether they will bring criminal charges relating to the death. Dr. Schulenberg is not accused of contributing to Prince’s death and is not the subject of any criminal case which may arise. Regardless, the civil suit arose as the doctor had prescribed opiates to Prince, using the name of his bodyguard, Kirk Johnson.
U.S Attorneys had pressed charges against Dr. Schulenberg as part of a move to tackle an ever-increasing opioid problem, in which they state medical professionals should be more responsible when prescribing these drugs. Schulenberg now has 30 days in which to pay his fine and has agreed to stricter monitoring and control of prescriptions of controlled substances for the next two years.
