The Number Of Vaping-Related Illness Is Rising

On Behalf of | Oct 15, 2019 | Product Liability

E-cigarettes have been in the news a lot lately, and not for good reasons. These products, touted as safer alternatives to traditional cigarettes, may not be so safe after all. These yet-to-be-regulated products are causing people to become ill, and healthcare professionals are not yet sure why. At Licata & Yeremenko, A Professional Law Corporation, we are here to help if you need a California product liability lawyer. If you or a loved one have been harmed by vaping, or by any other faulty product, call us today.

What Is Going On With E-Cigarettes?

The number of vape-related illnesses has steadily increased. As of late September, there have been over 800 confirmed or probable cases of severe lung disease and 12 deaths linked to vaping. Some of those affected have been teens, a group that many argue has been targeted by e-cigarette companies in advertisements.

The US government has reacted, at least verbally, to this growing problem. The president said he would not be opposed to an outright ban on all non-tobacco flavored e-cigarettes products. Many states have moved to restrict or eliminate sales of the products. The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has warned consumers to stop vaping altogether.

What Are The Dangers?

The problem is that regulators and healthcare professionals are not yet sure what is causing the illnesses and deaths associated with vaping. There are many brands of these products on the market, and no single one of them has been the “source” of each case. Consider these popular e-cigarette brands:

  • Juul
  • Blue E-Cigs
  • NJOY
  • Om Vapors
  • Green Smoke
  • Joyetech
  • KangerTech
  • Morpheus E-Cigs
  • Mig 21 Clear Fusion
  • VaporFi VAIO

None of these companies has been well-regulated. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has required all of these companies to submit their products for approval by next year if they want to continue to sell them, but this epidemic may speed up that timeline.

E-cigarettes use cartridges filled with a nicotine solution and a small battery to heat up the solution so the consumer can inhale it. Part of the solution used in these products contains neurotoxins, which are alleged to be poisonous when ingested and inhaled.

We want to note that the batteries in these products have also been known to overheat and explode, often causing severe harm to consumers.
